New library in Barceló Area, Madrid

The team of architects Nieto Sobejano, made by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, won the contest in 2007 to reform the Department Barceló in the heart of Madrid. They write the project in 2008 and work began in 2009; its completion is planned for 2012. The intervention focuses on the reform of the Barcelo market, but also in building a new sports hall and a new public library; in addition, of course, creating new spaces and new public spaces that provide oxygen in an environment urban dense and compact.

The library is located on the other side of a square of new construction, establishing a dialogue with the new buildings of the longitudinal and the sports market. It is a piece elongated, linear, rectangular. It is attached to an existing school, and is high on this as it flies over the yard, which passes underneath. Conceptually, it is a bridge-building that used to free up space in the courtyard and an expansion permit. The two sides in the vertical forces, are the core of communication and access, while the upper floors, the body horizontal closed set, it places the rest of the functional library.

The whole complex of three buildings have a consistent and formal unity, geometric and expressively, medium of the skin, the facades and the exterior, with a presence of large pieces of molded glass large and white and opaque.
